So, back to the Alderley Edge Hotel again for Helen and Garys small intimate wedding. I havent been there for a little while so it was nice to be back on familiar ground after a few weddings in new venues for me.
When I met Helen and Gary at the Alderley Edge hotel at the beginning of this year, they had seen a number of other photographers – which is always a good sign as they obviously knew what they wanted – someone who would keep their distance and document their wedding day without asking them to do embarrassing poses or photographs with silly props – that just wasnt their style – or mine !! So, once I had assured them – verbally and via my wedding albums – that this wasnt the case we could relax and get on with what they wanted rather than what they didnt want.
Firstly, Helen didnt want any bridal prep shots – unusual these days as its often the conerstone of most wedding photography. Helen was just very uncomfortable with having images taken at a time where she knew she was going to be very nervous. Having photographed hundreds of weddings its easy to forget that for a lot of people this can be a very stressful time and photographers imposing their presence upon them can often be unwelcome.
Secondly, the number of guests was going to be very small – 35 maximum ! Ok – this was going to be a challenge ( not the smallest wedding I have photographed – that was just 4 of us and I was one of the witnesses !!). The challenge of small weddings is that as a documentary wedding photographer there is just a lot less happening and so you really have to seek out the moments that make up their wedding day.
One particular moment that really struck home with me was after the speeches – Helens aunty had stepped in in place of Helens late mother and this obviously meant an awful lot to them both. There is a little sequence of images where the two really felt such an emotional bond that it was a joy to capture it.
Meal finished – Mr Disco rocks up with the awful ( for photographers) green and red dot laser show and a first dance to Whitesnake – what else !?
Anyway, heres a few from the day.
